Phinisi Boats

Phinisi is a type of wooden boat that originates from Bulukumba, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The people who make these boats are people from Konjo Tribe who are sailors and fishermen who’ve been building Phinisi boats since the 1400s.

The Phinisi rig comprises seven sails on two masts. The seven sails symbolize the ancestors’ ability to sail the seven oceans of the world. There are two kinds of Phinisi: Palari and Lambo. The latter is bigger in size and equipped with machinery so it doesn’t rely on wind power. As years go by, the function of Phinisi shifted from boats for the fishermen to luxury cruise boats.
